culture of Vanda
culture of Vanda
The Vandas are not the easiest genre for amateur: they are fond of heat and humidity, conditions that are difficult to obtain in an apartment or in a greenhouse.
These are orchid monopodial growth which can reach a large size (1m50). Interspecific hybrids (Ascoscenda, Aeridovanda) are often hardier and more floriferous, and are a smaller and therefore more suitable for growing indoors.
The name Vanda, original Sanskrit, is full of poetry and mystery. This may be why, in addition to the beauty of flowers, so many orchid interested in this genre.
In Asian, some 70 species are widespread Vandas from China to India and Ceylon in the Philippines, also in Indonesia, New Guinea and northern Australia. Some grow in sea level as Vanda sanderiana Rchb. F., which is actually Euanthe sanderiana (Rchb. f.) Schltr. Others grow at 1700 meters altitude, as V. amesiana. A large number of interspecific and intergeneric hybridizations were carried out, especially with Arachnis, which gives Arandas and Ascocentrum which gives Ascocendas. Note here that hybrids are classified as either sanderiana Vanda or as Vandanthe.
What a Vanda sold bare root in a vase?
The Vandas are marketed in a vase because the effect is beautiful and it protects the plant shock.
I do not think a lot of good in this how to grow Vandas: the plant needs air. If you have a greenhouse, you can try to grow in suspension, if the repot after flowering in a clay pot with a tutor, fill the pot expanded clay mixed with charcoal.
Despite their great diversity of origin, they adapt easily and are easily cultivated in a greenhouse or warm temperate except V. coerulea which means cold nights).
The Vandas give vigorous flower heads with a variable number of flowers. Thereof, the size of which is 5 to 10 cm have a variety of shape and color. It is pure white and also brown, green, pink, purple and blue.
Flowering dates are at any time of year, but especially in the spring and early summer.
Monopodial orchids, almost always epiphytes, Vandas have no rest. Their big round roots appear at any time of the year, at irregular intervals on the stem.
Temperature and humidity. Hot days are good for Vandas, with night temperatures of 13 ° C. at 18 ° C. They can endure long periods of very hot days. But every precaution must be taken to avoid burns on the leaves. They also support short periods of cold, but get to jelly.
The humidity hovered around 40 to 50% must be very strong during the sunniest days.
Plants must be subjected to high ventilation, ensuring good growth and good health, which prevents overheating in summer and winter leaves the development of fungal diseases.
The cylindrical leaf Vandas require maximum light to bloom. They also fail although in tropical areas where they are exposed to direct sunlight. Under greenhouse, flowering is sometimes difficult to obtain. It is also difficult inside or under artificial light.
Other Vandas are much less demanding. Outside, they remain in full light up to 11 hours and are then shaded a good part of the afternoon, especially during the summer, their leaves are sensitive to heat and light. Greenhouse they give maximum light and moisture by shading during the sunny hours.
During the growing season, watering for plants raised outdoors are daily, accompanied by several sprays if necessary. The medium must always be moist, but not soggy. Greenhouse, watering less frequently. However, one or two mists per day are useful for sunny days. Are reduced watering in the winter or during prolonged periods of cloudy weather, or after repotting.
Epiphytes, the Vandas do well in pots or hanging baskets. Cart is sometimes placed to market within a transparent vase, but it is a way of presenting the plant and pack: Do not leave lasting plant in the vase, it must have the outdoors. In the tropics they can be placed in trees grown in beds in a sandy soil.
All porous, airy and retaining moisture can be used. Environments based shards of clay, expanded clay mixed with charcoal very suitable. Anyhow, we must never settle the compost too. Pots or baskets are suspended if the aerial roots bind the shelves and are damaged when moving pots.
Monopodial plants, the potting do not have to be frequent. They are practiced in the case of decomposition of compost.
Growing indefinitely, Vandas happen to be very large, and they have lost their lower leaves, they take a look lanky. We can then divide the plant. It is cut to the upper part so that the upper part has roots, and that the lower part has yet leaves.
We choose a time when young roots grow and become old when branching. The roots are moistened so as to be more flexible and can be arranged in a circle inside the pot without breaking them. If this happens, they are sectioned at the break. Roots located too high are not introduced into the air but still compost. The base of the stem is depressed to about 5 cm in the middle, and Tutor.
Major consumers of fertilizers, vandas ask during the growth period, diluted fertilizer application once a week.
Practice once a month washing roots.
